How is illumination described in lodge symbolism?

Illumination in lodge symbolism refers to inner, moral and spiritual light—the understanding and virtue a Mason gains by studying the Craft and living by its principles under the guidance of the Great Lights. The Great Lights symbolize divine guidance and truth, helping a Mason shape character and conduct, not simply producing light or sparking intellectual debate. So illumination is about growth of the soul through study and proper behavior, reflecting the symbolic light that shines from the sacred guidelines under which the lodge operates.
