What is the meaning of the Level as a symbol?

The Level as a symbol is about equality. A level is a carpenter’s tool used to make sure surfaces are perfectly horizontal, with nothing higher or lower on the plane. In Freemasonry, that same idea is applied to people: every brother stands on equal footing, regardless of wealth, status, or position. The symbol reminds us that in the lodge, what matters is merit and conduct, not rank or title. That’s why the meaning is equality—everyone is on the same level.
